Catalogue Note

A wonderful fragment from Thackeray's diatribe on the abuse of literary figures by the press.

Thackeray writes in response to an ill-natured attack on George Smith (editor of Cornhill) by Edmund Yates written for a New York paper. "Certain writers, they say, have a bad opinion of women. Now am I very whimsical in supposing that this disappointed candidate will be hurt at her rejection ... Poor old Priam's bald numskull will be cracked, and Troy town will burn, because Paris prefers gold-haired Venus to ox-eyed Juno and grey-eyed Minerva."
