Catalogue Note
Sails on the Sea (Lot 40) is an important record of Liu Jiutong's journey toward understanding life. In exploring the sea of art, his romanticism has taken on a spirit that breaks through the shackles of hardship and boldly forges ahead. His convictions are firm in "searching for meaning high and low," an ideal expressed by the poet Qu Yuan. The colors in the painting clash with intensity, the brushstrokes are strong and vigorous, with swathes of paint presented in layers, creating an effect of tenacious, incomparable vitality, condensed upon the canvas.
Through the abstracted landscape and the spirit harnessed from Li Bai's verse, the artist has created an imposing and majestic painting. It expresses a lyricism removed from form, fusing the marrows of Eastern philosophy with Western media in a clever and harmonious display of technique. The viewer is invited to appreciate the limitless possibility that derives from the collision of East and West, and the blend of different lexicons of painting.
