Catalogue Note

“Since the late 1990s, Guleryuz has worked with scenes featuring human interaction with occasional animal familiars. Liberated from each other, expressionist line and colour have come to function independently to create complex and sensitive renditions of the human form. In contrast to his early works, sexuality is filled less with issues of dominance and power than with the tender danger of intimacy. Guleryuz uses forceful, jagged, primitive lines reminiscent of the ‘ugly’ paintings of the the early 1980s. However, line quality has come to vary creating differentiated areas of interest and disinterest while colour gives character not only to the figure, but to their shadows. Still concerned with the surfaces of the flesh, Guleryuz uses his examination not to denude and thereby chastise society, but rather to empathise with a shared sense of nakedness.”
