Description

modelled seated, his platted wig forming the handle, painted with scattered blue flowers, his cuffs and buttons picked out in ochre and iron-red, upon a rockwork base picked out in yellow affixed with a metal tap.

Condition

The front section of the figure's tricorn hat has been broken and re-stuck. There are a few scattered typical minor glaze chips.

Catalogue Note

Figural cisterns of varying male and female forms, probably intended for Wine, Gin or Beer are referred to in Dutch as 'Bobbejak' or 'Bobbejakken', whilst in England they are called Toby Jugs. A closely related example of this model is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, object number: BK-NM-9530.
