Catalogue Note

The crest and motto are those of Brand of Laurieston, Scotland. The firm of retail silvermiths F.B Thomas used  a number of prominent manufacting silversmiths of the time such as C.T. and G. Fox, Francis Higgins and George Angell, but they are most associated with Richard Sibley a firm with beginnings in the 18th century. In addition to 153 New Bond street, F.B Thomas shared an address with Richard Sibley, 13 Oxford Market. John Culme cautiously wrote `judging from the fact that both Sibley and Thomas are recorded at the same address.....their association appears to have been more than just a passing one'. The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, London, 1987, p. 445.
