Description

  • Mahogany, leather
  • 76cm. high, 152.5cm. wide, 86cm. deep; 2ft. 6in., 5ft., 2ft. 10in.
with a rectangular tooled leather inset, the reeded edge above five drawers opposed by dummys, on shaped end supports raised on platforms with scroll and paterae carved supports 

Provenance

Most probably commissioned by Richard Grenville, 2nd Marquess of Buckingham for Wotton House, Buckinghamshire.
Acquired with the house by Michael Wentworth Beaumont, MP, in 1929 and thence by descent.

Condition

The replaced leather inset is stained with ink and water marks and has a burn mark right through the leather (approximately 4in in diameter). Minor losses to veneers and mouldings. One side of the desk more faded than the other. One lock replaced and with signs of patching. Feet scuffed consistent with use.

Catalogue Note

This table was almost certainly supplied following the rebuilding of Wootton House, Buckinghamshire under the direction of of Sir John Soane following the devastating fire in 1820.
