Catalogue Note
A similar Venetian republic tazza was sold Sotheby's Paris, 26 June 2013, lot 257. It was part of a substantial group once belonging to a family who for many generations had lived on the Aegean Island of Patmos. There was a significant influx of Cretan Venetians to Patmos when Crete fell to the Ottomans in 1669. Other elements of this important group of silver were sold Sothebys Paris 25 November 2010 lots 358-362. The present tazza was for a long time on the Ionian island of Keffalonia which was taken by Venice from the ottomans in 1500. Another tazza of this type, makers mark only two bells in a rectangle was sold Sothebys Geneva, 9 May 1988 lot 54.
