A very rare and unrecorded metal-mounted Nymphenburg pipe, circa 1755-1760

Description

  • Porcelain, Ivory
  • 7.3cm., 2 7/8 in. long
modelled by Franz Anton Bustelli and left in the white, as Harlequin as a pilgrim with a joyful expression wearing a tilted hat surmounted with a shell and a ruff, impressed shield mark to base of head.

Condition

There is a repaired area around the mouth of the pipe above the modelled head, with a small area of associated glaze crazing. There are a few flat chips to the brim of the hat, the largest measures approximately 0.7cm wide.

Catalogue Note

No other examples of this model in the white are currently recorded in the literature. Enamelled examples are in the collection of the Bavarian National Museum, Munich, Inv.-Nr. Ker 1560, (published by Katharina Hantschmann/ Alfred Ziffer, Bustelli, Nymphenburger Porzellanfiguren Des Rokoko, 2004, no. 196), the Bäuml Collection, (published by Alfred Ziffer in the collection catalogue, 1997, no. 61) and the Deutsches Tabak-museum, Bünde. A further example was sold in these rooms on 26th April 1960, lot 46.
