  • Silk panel
the green silk ground woven with cream coloured horizontal chevron bands containing calligraphic inscriptions, between bands with vase-shaped cartouches and roundels also containing inscriptions

In overall good condition, backed with cotton cloth, as viewed.

Repetition of the following in four bands:

'God is my Lord and there is not equal to Him, Muhammad is the Messenger of God' (wide band)

'O God! Bless and grant salvation upon the most noble of all the prophets and messengers' (narrow band)

'Peace and salutation be upon you O The Messenger of God' (wide band)

'And May Mighty God pleased with Abu Bakr and `Umar and `Uthman and `Ali and the rest of friends all of them' (narrow band)

A very similar piece was shown in the Unity of Islam exhibition at the King Faisal Foundation in 1985, and a comparable panel of identical design is in the Musée Historique des Tissus, Lyon (see Welch 1979, no.185). Furthermore, a similar piece in the Topkapi Museum, Istanbul, Turkey, inv. no.13/1690 is published in N. Atasoy, W.B. Denny, L.W. Mackie and H.Tezcan, Ipek: The Crescent and Rose: Imperial Ottoman Silks and Velvets, London, 2001, p.296, fig.280.
