Catalogue Note
The present firman, executed on highly polished paper in diwani script in black, red and gold, is addressed to Nilos, the priest in charge of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Egypt following the death of Patriarch Nicophoros in 1865. Until the succession of a new Patriarch, the firman acknowledges the authority of Nilos by the Sublime Port, whilst noting that all Greek Orthodox Christians in Egypt are ultimately under Istanbul's authority. Nilos is informed that if necessary he may show the firman to the Egyptian Khedive, to remind him of this fact.
