  • WALNUT PINE BEECH
  • 107cm. high; 3ft. 6in.
the back centered by a stylized shell carved with scales over a solid shaped splat inlaid with a flower-filled vase and foliate scrolls flanked by scrolled stiles over an incurving padded drop-in seat covered in associated floral needlework over a serpentine seatrail centred by a scale-carved shell on stylised anthemia-headed cabriole legs carved with acanthus, with scrolled brackets and foliate-carved scrolled feet

Condition

This chair is in good general condition. The colour and patina are both excellent. The base of the splat is cracked to the back. One of the rear spandrels is cracked. Feet previously with castors. Repairs to one rear foot. The later floral needlework on terracotta coloured ground is in good condition. There is a small vertical split between a leaf and the ground.

It is apparent that this chair forms part of a larger suite, of at least six, with four further chairs formerly in the collection of David Gubbay now at Clandon Park, Surrey and illustrated in-situ by J. Cornforth, The Inspiration of the Past, London, 1985, pl. 191 and col. pl. XXXVII, whilst a further chair is in the collection of The Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
