Condition
Very good plaster and very fine in all details with metallic points destined for the modelling of the marble. A few minor scratches to surface and a few minor dips to the edges of the bust. Minor restoration to both earlobes. Very good and crisp plaster, which can be highly recommended.

Catalogue Note
Ce modèle fut élaboré entre 1740 et 1744, lors du séjour de Jacques Saly à l'Académie de France à Rome. Une version en marbre fut exposée pour la première fois au Salon de 1750(n° 147). La Jeune Fille à la natte connaît aussitôt un immense succès et sa renommée rayonne au-delà des frontières de la France jusqu' à Copenhague où un plâtre du sujet fut exposé en 1769. Bien que certains y ont vu le portrait d'Alexandrine d'Etiolles, fille de Madame de Pompadour, ou de la fille du peintre Jean-François de Troy, il semblerait plutôt s'agir d'une tête d'expression, ou tête de caractère. Au cours du XIXe siècle, elle sera d'ailleurs renommée la Jeune Boudeuse. Outre le buste du Salon de 1750, un buste en marbre est conservé au Victoria and Albert museum (inv. no. 8510-1863), un autre se trouve en collection privée. La Jeune Fille à la natte a également été réalisée en bronze, la National Gallery de Washington en conserve un exemplaire (inv. no. 1942.9.128). Un autre bronze a été adjugé par Sotheby's Paris le 7 novembre 2014, lot 224 (55 500 EUR). Les points de repère métaliques visibles sur notre plâtre indiquent qu'il a servi de modèle à un exemplaire en marbre.
