Condition
Very crisp and exquisite cast with light brown golden patina. Fine chiselling and hammering to the surface of the bronze and to the curls of his hair, as well as to the drapery.The diagonal belt around his chest with fine ornemental decoration incised in 'pointillé'. Remains of dark varnish in several places to his legs and in the crevices. A few minor spots and dark brown discoloration of patina to the drapery on his back. Fantastic bronze which can be highly recommended.

Catalogue Note
L'Apollon se distingue par sa belle patine brun claire couleur cuivre et sa surface finement ciselée, tout à fait caractéristique du travail d'artistes florentins de la fin du XVIIe siècle, tels Massimiliano Soldani Benzi (1656-1740) ou Giambattista Foggini (1652-1725).Aux proportions sveltes et longilignes, la fonte rend chaque détail avec précision, tels le modelé de la chevelure et du drapé, ainsi que le bandeau du carquois gravé d'ornements en pointillé. L'Apollon antique en marbre est mentionné en 1511 au Belvédère à Rome comme la sculpture la plus 'famoso del mondo'. Une première copie en bronze a déjà été réalisée par l'Antico en 1489 (Ca' d'Oro, Venise). Dès 1540, Primatice réalisera une fonte grandeur nature du marbre antique pour François Ier, toujours en place au château de Fontainebleau. Louis XIV en possédait un bel exemplaire dans sa collection d'une taille presque identique à l'exemplaire présenté ici, aujourd'hui au musée du Louvre (inv. n° OA 11884).
