Condition

The bowl is in overall very good condition. The cover has a ca. 5 cm wide crescent-shaped part comprising four small pieces broken out of the rim with old restoration. The pigments on the bowl and cover show light wear.

Catalogue Note

Several similarly covered ivory bowls with carved and stained designs are known. An example formerly in the Qing Court collection, is illustrated in The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, p. 218, fig. 166. Compare also a related bowl decorated with persimmon fruits, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 31st May 2010, lot 1888.
