Catalogue Note
Painted in the late 1920s, this work closely relates to two paintings known as Corrida (private collections), each dated 1929, the year when Man Ray focused his attention once again to automatic painting. In a similar fashion to his Aerographs (airbrush paintings made without the use of a paint brush) or Rayographs (photographic compositions made without a camera or negative), the present painting belongs to a small number of paintings composed by skillfully squeezing pigment directly from the paint tube, only using a paintbrush for the underlying ground of the arena and depicting the crowd with colourful dots. The first owner of this painting was Gertrude Stein who chose Man Ray to be her official portrait photographer in the early 1920s.
