Condition
The canvas is not lined. The surface is slightly dirty and there are some accretions to the left of the upper ridge of the column (visible in the catalogue illustration). This work is in very good original condition.

Catalogue Note
In early 1922, Maurice Denis married Elisabeth Graterolle and the couple honeymooned in the South of France. On 26th April, the newlyweds then travelled to Venice where an important retrospective of the artist’s work was to take place during the International Exhibition. During this trip Denis painted several evocative cityscapes, and the voyage was later immortalised in his illustrated book Carnets de voyage en Italie 1921-1922, first published in 1925. The luminous depictions of La Serenissima radiate the new found happiness Denis had found with Elisabeth, after the death of his beloved first wife Marthe three years earlier.
