Catalogue Note
In the present work, Miró seems to be inspired by the aesthetics of a mask worn by one of the characters in the play Mori el Merma, on which he collaborated with the theatre group La Claca from 1976. Using his artistic talents for the creation of the costumes and set design but also for the production and direction of the play, the result reflects the artist’s artistic universe, just as if the scene was transformed into a live and moving painting.
A thinly veiled metaphor for dictatorships and the Franco regime, Mori el Merma was inspired by Alfred Jarry’s famous play, Ubu Roi, which Miró particularly admired. The play was lauded by the press and by Catalan society, and allowed the public to see Miró’s work in a different light. The artist himself recognised that theatre was one of the best means of expressing his personal vocabulary, his symbols and his artistic theories.
