Catalogue Note

The album opens with a large view of Mussoorie and Landoor (310 x 415mm.) followed by a salt print of the entrance to Balaclava harbour in the Crimea (1855-56) attributed to James Robertson and Beato; then a series of 33 of Beato's photographs of India taken in the late 1850s, with views of Lucknow, Agra, and Delhi (including a 3-part panorama of Delhi, a 2-part panorama of the Cashmere bastion, and a 2-part vertical panorama of the Kootub Minar), together with a group portrait of Generals Sir Hope Grant, Lord Clyde and Sir W. Mansfield at Lucknow, and other military portraits in Calcutta (1859), and the 60th Rifles at Dover (1860), at the Tower of London (1863), and Hythe barracks (1864), together with named portraits of officers and men, and some with their wives. The album also contains 19 views in Scotland (including Garscube (5), Calder Hall, Meadowbank, Hopetoun, and Philpstoun) and 12 in the Alps and the Italian Lakes.
