Description

  • Four Bronzes
  • bronze
  • Heights 2 7/16 , 3 7/8 , 4 3/8 (without tenons), and 3 1/2 in. 6.2, 9.9, 11.1, and 8.9 cm.
comprising a Greek or Etruscan horse-head protome, with grooved mouth, indented nostrils, striated mane divided down the center, and tuft of hair between the erect ears, an Etruscan figure of Herakles, standing with right arm raised and formerly holding a club, his left hand on hip, a chlamys draped over his left shoulder, the radiating hair deeply grooved, an Etruscan figure of a priest, of flattened form indented behind, holding a patera and incense box, and wearing an himation and radiating diadem of leaves, and an Etruscan figure of Herakles, of slender form standing and wielding a club, the lion-skin over his left arm.

For the priest, which belongs to a type closely associated with Lake Nemi, cf. Dorothy Kent Hill, Catalogue of Classical Bronze Sculpture in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, 1949, no. 136.
Edward M. Nagel (1905-1996), Asian art collector, founder of Orowheat Whole Grain Breads, and philanthropist with a foundation in his name, acquired at least some of the objects in his collection from Oscar Meyer Antique Works of Art in Los Angeles.
