Catalogue Note
In the margin at the bottom of the watercolor is the hand written description, View towards the Northwest, on the old road, 4 to 5 Miles East of Bloody run. The river Juniata winds between the warrior Mountain, and the wooded Mountain, both on the left hand, passes front of the nearest Hill in the Gap, to the right, returns behind it to the left, and then returns to the right behind the second Mountain. In the distance are seen Evatts (Evitts) mountain, and more distant ridges toward the Alleghenny. Drawn from nature. This is one of Latrobe's writings and drawings of a Young America. More than a hundred of these drawings are in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society.
Latrobe's Travels between Washington, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh 1813-1816 Sketchbook.
Latrobe began drawings of this subject on 11 April 1815 in Sketchbook XIII, and he subsequently worked up the present landscape. He drew the scene from a position east of the village of Ray's Hill (now Breezewood, Bedford County), looking west across the bend of the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River to Warrior Mountain and, in the distance Evitts Mountain. The landscape today remains much as it was when Latrobe viewed it.
