Catalogue Note
In 1924 Milton Avery met Sally Michel in Gloucester, Massachusettes; they married in 1926. Sally was a painter and freelance illustrator, including for the New York Times Sunday magazine, and her commercial success contributed to her husband's ability to pursue painting full time. The couple shared a studio for almost forty years.
