Condition

Condition Report from Simon Parkes Conservation, Inc., an independent restorer (9/29/2014): This painting is in very good condition. However, there is a small complex break on the top edge between the upper left corner and the upper center and another small discolored retouching in the same area. The painting is slightly dirty and dull. There is one small chip on the extreme right edge in the center. There is a small loss in the green tree on the right end of the lake and a couple of other small losses. The back of the canvas has received a rather unattractive lining, which was presumably applied to repair this small damage on the top edge. However, this is excessive, and if the lining were removed, the work could probably remain unlined with only a small repair at the top edge. The painting could then be cleaned, retouched and varnished.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Catalogue Note

The present work depicts a scene near Thompson's Pond in Orange County, New York, a subject the artist represented on a number of occasions.  According to E.M. Ruttenber and L.H. Clark's History of Orange County, New York of 1881; "Thompson's Pond is in the northwest part of Warwick, east of Florida, and extends into Chester.  It covers an area of about one hundred acres.  Its outlet furnishes power for grist- and saw-mills, and is a tributary of Quaker Creek.  It has recently been re-christened, and is now entered on the map Glenmere Lake."
