Catalogue Note

This painting likely depicts the area of Catskill or Kaaterskill Clove, North-South Lake, New York in the Catskill Mountains near the historic Catskill Mountain House.  The area was one of the most popular Catskill subjects for the artists of the Hudson River School.  Images of the area's stunning geographic features were painted by Thomas Cole, Jasper Cropsey, Asher B. Durand, Sanford Robinson Gifford and Edmund Darch Lewis, among others.
According to Jeffrey Brown, the artist visited the Bolton, New York area, on the western shore of Lake George, in September, 1867.  In an e-mail, dated March 15, 2014, Mr. Brown goes on to say, "During the 1860s, Bricher often made sketches including small figures...which could relate to the fisherman at the edge of the pool.  I believe that this painting is an early example of Bricher's mature pictures where he uses non-speicific topography reassembled in the studio to evoke the spirit of an experience, not just a time of year, but also a particular quality of light and weather".
