Condition
Condition Report from Alvarez Fine Art Services, 3/11/2014: Overall this casein on paper is in stable condition. The paper is glued to 2ply card to support a number of structural disturbances. This card is in turn glued to another slightly larger 4ply cotton rag board. The paper was mounted to the card to support two tears: one significant "S" shaped tear bisecting the sheet from top to bottom near the vertical axis, and another 1" vertical tear at the bottom-right edge. The paper was also creased at the topleft corner and top-right edge before it was mounted. There is one subtle horizontal surface abrasion at the centerleft edge. The paper is ever so slightly lifting from the mount is two places at the center-left and center-right edges. Visually, the paper is mildly oxidized throughout from a natural process of aging due to UV light exposure. There are two 1/8" circular paint losses located left-of center, one in an area of white pigment and the other in the area of yellow. Otherwise the media appears well preserved and does not exhibits signs of significant fading.

Catalogue Note
George Wettling, the well-known Chicago-based jazz drummer and Davis were close friends. When Wettling took-up painting in his later years, his work was heavily influenced by Davis' style of cubism. Davis named his son, George Earl, after him and the pianist, Earl Hines.
