Condition

Condition Report as per Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. (3/31/2014): This painting is in good condition. The tacking edges of the canvas have been reinforced, but the painting is not lined. The paint layer is clean, stable and nicely varnished. The light sweeping lines through the horse's figure are intentional. The slight thinness in the horses on the right and left also seem to be intentional. Under ultraviolet light, one can see retouching immediately to the left of the mallet of the lead rider and also fairly significant retouching to the right of the mallet in the center of the sky between the mallet and the right edge. There are some retouches in the sky above the rider's hip. There are also retouches in the grass between the front and rear hooves of the main horse. Some of the brighter greens in the lower right quadrant in the grass are presumably not period, and there is the possibility that the puffy white cloud in the upper left has received some retouches. Nonetheless, the work looks well and should be hung as is.
