Condition

The painting has been cut down, is lined and has reinforced tacking edges Condition Report by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This work has been lined onto Mylar with a synthetic adhesive. The tacking edges are reinforced with a thin gauze like fabric. Although the support is slightly unusual aesthetically, it is adequate and appropriate in many ways. The retouches that have been added are used to reduce pentimenti, changes by the artist that have reappeared over time. It seems Hill himself changed the composition of some of the rock formations, and retouches were applied to clarify the image when this became more evident. Retouches are clearly visible in the upper right and in the valley in the center. However, the amount of retouching is probably misleading. It is doubtful that there is any actual paint loss, and while the restoration is not entirely cosmetic, it is likely greatly exaggerated. The only actual damages seem to be a vertical scratch and possible break in the canvas in the lower right that runs about 4-5 inches, and another in the lower left beneath the figures, which also runs about 4-5 inches. It is recommended that the retouching be re-examined, since it is probably exaggerated and misleading.
