Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.Some vertical hairlines in places. One open stabilized crack up to the proper right mounting holes.

Catalogue Note
Parmi les nombreuses masquettes lukungu créées par les Lega dans le contexte de l’association hiérarchique du Bwami, celles en ivoire et en os d’éléphant (cf. n° 33), beaucoup plus rares et inconnues de certaines communautés, sont la propriété des initiés du grade suprême lutumbo lwa kindi, dont elles symbolisent le prestigieux statut. Lorsque l’un d'eux décède, sa masquette est transmise à un nouvel initié kindi, après avoir été exposée sur sa tombe. Conservées dans le sac en bandoulière des initiés, elles sont utilisées dans de rares occasions, entourant parfois sur une claie un grand masque muminia (cf. n° 7). Dans ce cas seulement, elles représentent les crânes des guerriers morts au combat au cours des batailles historiques menées lors des migrations, à Atondo et Ikonge.
