Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1975.

Zeki Faik studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul between 1923 and 1928 under Hikmet Onat and later Ibrahim Calli. Like preceeding generations of artists, Izer saw Paris as the centre of modern art and travelled there to study painting at the Andre Lhote studio while also learning about ceramics and fresco techniques at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. On his return to Turkey in 1932, he founded the 'D' group with fellow artists Abidin Dino, Cemal Tollu, Elif Naci, Zuhdi Muridoglu and Nurullah Berk. Their aim was to rebel against the highly academic and conservative art education in Turkey and to introduce and promote new art movements locally. Izer served as the Director of the Istanbul Academy from 1948-1952 and established the Turkish Art History Institute in 1957. Izer's passion was to work with colour and to experiment with various styles of abstraction but always interpreted in a very personal manner, at times showing influences from calligraphy, geometry and music.
