Description

  • Elisabeth Sonrel
  • Jeune fille en jaune
  • signed Elisabeth Sonrel lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 54.5 by 73cm., 21½ by 28¾in.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. Ultra-violet light reveals strokes of strengthening notably along the right edge of the figure's left arm, in parts of her cheeks, the lower part of her neck, and two small repairs (both patched on the reverse), one in the rose above the figure's hand and one in the drapery above her elbow; there are also some scattered strokes and small areas of retouching in the background however not all of the fluorescing pigments in the background appear to relate to retouching. Under U.V. light some areas of her décolletage and the clothing over her breast fluoresce green and it is possible these also relate to retouching. The overall appearance of the work under normal light is good and it is ready to hang. The catalogue illustration is reasonably accurate however the colours (in particular the yellows) are somewhat more luminous in reality. Presented in a decorative gilt rococo-style frame.
