Catalogue Note

This rare and finely modelled wax maquette provides a fascinating glimpse into the initial stages of Dalou’s creative process. It is thought that the present wax figure relates to the sculpture surmounting the Monument to Justice intended for the Salle Casimir-Perier in the Chamber of Deputies, Paris, which was commissioned by its president, Charles Floquet. After Floquet’s term ended, however, the construction of the monument was abandoned. Only an empty niche surrounded by murals painted by Delacroix remains. In a drawing for the monument kept in the Petit Palais (inv .no. 91 PPA 1643 A), Dalou depicted a pyramidal massing of three female figures of which the seated figure is thought to be the direct descendant of the present wax figure. Dalou often reworked poses and transferred attributes from one figure to another, so it is not surprising that the present preliminary study differs from the sketch.
