Catalogue Note

It is said that the present marble was commissioned from De Martelaere. The inspiration for this piece is drawn from Neoclassical figures, and is a departure from the stylised sculpture which De Martelaere is best known for.  Compare for example Johann Friedrich Drake’s Nymph with a butterfly illustrated in Ethos and Pathos (op.cit.).
