Catalogue Note

Richard Garbe was Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London from 1929 to 1946. He was best known for his small scale works, of which this beautiful little stylised bronze bust is an exemplar. Garbe was the son of a German ivory carver, possibly explaining his interest in works on a smaller scale. He himself carved ivories, one of which can be found in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv. no. Circ. 592-1976).
