Catalogue Note
Boyce arrived in Venice on 16 June 1854 where he received a letter from John Ruskin in which the sender apologised for ‘perhaps being partly instrumental in leading you into the expense and trouble of a long journey, when there was quite enough material to employ you delightfully nearer at home.’ (Virginia Surtees, The Diaries of George Price Boyce, 1980, appendix, pp.119-120) On the contrary, Boyce was enchanted by Venice and stayed for four months, finding inspiration at every turn. Although Ruskin urged Boyce to concentrate upon painting watercolours of the architecture of Venice – and Boyce produced some remarkably detailed and beautiful watercolours including St Mark’s, Venice, South-West Angle (private collection) and Venice: Canal Scene (private collection) - the present beautiful watercolour is testament to the artist’s response to the romance of the city. This broadly-painted watercolour is strikingly reminiscent of the work of Ruskin.
