Catalogue Note
The present lot is belongs to an exceedingly rare group of jump-hour watches made by Patek Philippe. It is the opinion of Patek Philippe scholars that these watches were created upon special request. According to our research, only ten watches featuring such a complication have come to auction. Of these, five were created in the late 19th century, between 1885 and 1895, and five more were made between 1919 and 1928.
Approximately half of the known jump hour watches were made for the American market, retailed by firms such as Jacques & Marcus, Wright Kay, and Cowell & Hubbard Co. The present lot, though unmarked by a retailer, was also made for the American market as evidenced by the case.
An open-faced jump hour watch featuring up and down indication and with a First Class rating certificate is illustrated in Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Watches, p. 160. This watch is also listed as museum no. 163, illustrated in 'Exposition de la Fabuleuse Collection Privée de Patek Philippe', p. 49.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the present lot has been offered at auction.
