Condition
Overall in very good condition. The glass with a few very small and minor air bubble inclusions inherent in the making. With some very fine and light surface scratches to the exterior and underbase of the vase consistent with age and gentle handling. The interior with traces of light surface soiling. The interior and exterior of the vase are intensely iridized, displaying strong color and luminosity. The thick iridized bands display striking hues of deep aqua, turquoise and golden yellow, and the rich blue background passages display strong luminous tones of magenta. A superb example of this challenging and sophisticated Lava technique. The vase presents beautifully in person with a bold sculptural presence and outstanding color. The colors and iridescence show greater nuance than seen in the catalogue photographs, which are slightly over saturated.

Catalogue Note
Louis C. Tiffany likely drew inspiration for favrile “Lava” glass from Japanese ceramics characterized by rough surface textures and irregular glazes. The use of an iridized treatment in the glassmaking process references the interest in archeological discoveries of ancient Roman glass with iridized surfaces due to their long exposure to and retention of elements in the soil. Rare because of their challenging technical construction with thick, applied gold trailings reminiscent of molten ash, “Lava” vases were only made during a brief period in the company’s history in the mid-1900s.
