Condition
This early ferrotyped print is on medium-weight paper and is trimmed to the image. It is in generally very good condition, considering that it was part of an active archival publishing file for nearly 60 years. The edges are rubbed, with some tiny chipping at the periphery. The corners are bumped and creased. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: a number of soft and sharp handling creases throughout, none of which appears to break the emulsion; and semi-transparent deposits of indeterminate nature in the lower left quadrant near the edges.
The red printing date stamp indicates that this print was made on March 19, 1943.

Catalogue Note
This print, and that in the following lot, were submitted to LIFE in early 1944 for a story entitled 'Europe's Children Are Hungry,' which appeared in the 5 May 1944 issue. The lead image was another of Vishniac's iconic images, Sara, The Only Flowers of Her Youth, Warsaw.
