Catalogue Note
First edition of Bale's influential catalogue of British authors and their works, still an important source for the manuscript holdings of many Augustinian and Carmelite houses before their dissolution. Bale had fled to the Continent following the passage of the Act of Six Articles in 1539; he first arranged for his works to be printed in Antwerp but was forced to move to Wesel when the imperial authorities imposed tighter restrictions on Protestant publication.
