Catalogue Note
The first Prayer Book published in the reign of Elizabeth I. John Cawood had been made Queen's Printer in July 1553 and not only printed many of the key documents in Mary Tudor's attempts to restore Catholicism (for his Prayers or collectes to be sayd in the Masse for the Quenes highness, beinge with childe see lot 104) but was also given authority to seize prohibited books. However, his association with Mary did not signal the end of his career on the accession of Elizabeth I: in 1560 he and Richard Jugge were named joint royal printers.
