- Illuminated manuscript in Latin, on vellum. [Northern France (doubtless Paris), mid-thirteenth century]

468 leaves (1 blank, plus 6 endleaves), 123mm. by 79mm., wanting a leaf after fol.436 (from Nahum iii.6 to Hab. i.3) and leaves from end, else apparently complete, double column, 45 lines in black ink in a fine and legible early gothic bookhand, capitals touched in red, headings and versal numbers in alternate blue and red, 2-line initials in red or blue with contrasting spiky penwork extending length of entire horizontal borders (almost every leaf with text borders like this), fifty-six decorated initials enclosing foliage, birds or lacertine interweaving dragons, touched in gold or with gold fruit (those at rear of volume with damage), thirty-seven historiated initials in same (sixteen with significant damage), one full-page border enclosing nine roundels with scenes from Genesis, the Crucifixion and life of Christ, some splits to thin vellum and areas where ink has burnt through leaves in places, damaged at end of volume with scorching affecting last fifteen leaves, entire volume trimmed with damage to decoration, else fair condition, modern brown leather over pasteboards with cloth ties in period style, modern brown buckram folding case

This is a charming pocket-Bible adapted for personal use, with the Old Testament (fols.1r-286v and 294r-468v), surrounding the Prefaces and Canon of the Mass with musical notation (fols.287r-89v), votive masses (fols.289v-91r), prayers, cues of antiphons and psalms of the burial service (fols.292v-93r).
