Condition

The painting is in overall good condition. It is painted on an oak panel made with one non cradle plank. The paint surface is perfectly stable. We can notice a very light beginning of slit of five centimetres long starting in the upper right corner. They are some little worn places by dot in the ground lower centre. Under UV lamp: Under a thick green uniform varnish. No visible restoration.

Catalogue Note

Notre tableau est une étude pour une oeuvre de Peeter Symons conservée au musée du Prado (Museo del Prado, catalogo de pinturas, Escuela flamenca siglo XVII, p.388, rep.n°1971).
Peeters Simons est un peintre flamand de l'entourage de Rubens. Le musée du Prado conserve aussi un tableau de même sujet, Cephale et Procris, par Rubens qui a probablement inspiré Symons pour notre tableau (voir opus cité infra, p.305, n°2459).
