Acquis par la famille Flammarion dans les années 1910-1920, peut-être par Ernest Flammarion, fondateur des Editions Flammarion et arrière grand-père des propriétaires actuels.

Condition

The photography in the printed catalogue is slighlty too light Under naked eyes: the painting is dirty, one vertical restored dent (5 cm) is slightly visible in the center of the canvas in the sky. A few worn places show the dark ground layer especially in the sky. Under UV light: a few retouchings are visible along the frame in the upper right hand part The paitning is in overall good condition

Catalogue Note

Dans un courrier daté du 16 février 2012, Jean-Jacques Fernier indique que le tableau a pu être exécuté soit en été 1859 alors que Courbet séjourne à Honfleur, à la ferme Saint Siméon, soit, plus probablement à la fin de l'été 1865 lors de son séjour à Trouville: durant ce séjour, il réalisa 35 toiles.
