Description

  • George Nakashima
  • Pair of "Conoid Cushion" Chairs
  • East Indian rosewood, hickory and fabric upholstery

Provenance

Acquired directly from the artist by Robert O. Cash
Wright Chicago, October 6, 2002, lot 116

Condition

Overall very good original condition. The frames of these two chairs are executed in highly figured rosewood that is rare for this chair model. The selection of the rosewood adds even greater depth to this highly sculptural form. The top stretcher of the backrest presents with evidence of light sun fading. One of the edges to the reverse of the backrest with a old minor edge loss measuring one inch in length. The lower portion of the frame with a few minor surface scratches and edge nicks consistent with gentle use. The upholstery on the cushions is likely later and is executed in a manner and material consistent with the original design. Each of the cushions show only very gentle evidence of use, with a few minor surface discolorations. These two chairs are a very well-matched pair, and each show similar even wear. This lot is a rare opportunity to acquire this iconic Nakashima chair model executed in a richly figured rosewood.
