Condition

Partially relined. Faint dent to the lower right. Fine, stable craquelure. Two specks of paint loss along the upper edge. Scattered, minor retouchings visible under uv-light, notably along the bust to the left, near the paper roll, next to the foot stool and on the gorund to the right. Some minor retouchings in the figurer's hair. Good condition.

Catalogue Note

Jean François Sablet zählt zu den bedeutenden Schweizer Porträt-, Figuren- und Landschaftsmalern um 1800. Er studierte an der Académie royale in Paris.  Zwischen 1768 und 1803 war er mehrheitlich in der französischen Metropole tätig abgesehen beispielsweise von seinem Aufenthalt bei seinem Bruder Jacques in Rom. Seine Gemälde waren an den Kunstsalons in Paris von 1795, 1799 und 1804 ausgestellt und wurden vom Publikum sehr geschätzt. Ab 1805 bis zu seinem Tode lebte Sablet in Nantes. Beim vorliegenden Gemälde handelt es sich um ein wunderbares Werk des Malers.
