Catalogue Note

Alexander Matveevich Wegner (1824-1894) was a portrait miniaturist who was promoted to Academician of the St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts in 1858 having completed his studies there. The pinnacle of his career arrived in the 1870s when he produced miniatures of Emperor Alexander II and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, both of which are now to be found in the Hermitage. The latter is depicted soon after her eighteenth birthday with the Star of St Catherine proudly on display. The present lot complements this group, portraying the Empress Consort of All the Russias towards the end of her life which was plagued by illness induced by the damp climate of St Petersburg.
