Catalogue Note

The 1st Earl of Lonsdale had an income of £80-100,000 per annum, and spent lavishly at the Royal Goldsmiths in fitting out his four establishments.  In addition to significant pieces by Scott and Smith and Paul Storr, the Earl's purchase of one of the five Achilles Shields places him in the first tier of Rundell and Bridge's patrons.
