Provenance
The arms are those of Fitzgerald under a duke's coronet for the Duke of Leinster, probably Augustus Fitzgerald, 3rd Duke (1791-1874). He was the eldest surviving son of William Fitzgerald, 2nd Duke of Leinster and his wife Emilia. He inherited his father's dukedom in 1804 and in 1818 married Lady Charlotte Augustus Stanhope, 3rd daughter of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington. In 1813 he was chosen Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. He was Lord Lieut. of Kildare 1831-74, Privy Council of Ireland and Britain 1831, Lord High Constable of Ireland at the coronations of William IV and Victoria. His Kildare residence is the well-known Palladian house Carton, the largest house in Ireland, while his Dublin townhouse, Leinster House, designed by Richard Cassels and built in 1745, is the seat of the Irish government since 1922.
