Condition

Original canvas, which is slightly loose on the stretcher and has a minor unevenness in the corners. There are frame abrasions along the edges and flecks of paint loss. Stretcher bar marks are faintly visible along the edges, in particular along the top. There are a couple of surface scratches at the top right edge. There is scattered craquelure and a small area of raised craquelure in the figure's face. There is a vertical line of craquelure primarily in the middle right. There is a minor area of paint loss at the top right edge and a few flecks of paint loss in the lower right near the figure's sleeve, which has a very tiny stain. Inspection under UV light reveals a thick layer of varnish and possibly one small area of retouching in the lower left at the base of the instrument. Held in a gold-painted, carved, wooden frame. Unexamined out of frame.
