Catalogue Note
Cleopatra premiered in Paris in 1909 at the Théȃtre du Chȃtelet and was met with immediate and resounding success from critics and the public alike. The sumptuous music by Rimsky-Korsakov and Modest Mussorgsky, expressive choreography by Michel Fokine, and exotic costume and set designs by Leon Bakst created a production that was considered the best of the entire 1909 Ballets Russes season, capitalizing on the public's enthrallment with the Orient.
The present lot is inscribed by Bakst with a dedication to André Saglio, a friend of the artist's and a French theatre critic. Saglio himself worked on set designs for the Paris Opera in the early 1900s, and was a professor at l'École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
