Condition

The sheets are generally sound and have discoloured due to age. There is some light foxing to the sky area in six sheets. More intense spotting and foxing is visible on three sheets. Held in modern wooden frames behind perspex. Unexamined out of frames.

Catalogue Note

Wilhelm Duke of Bavaria visited St. Petersburg to arrange the marriage of the eldest son of the Bavarian Elector Maximilian IV to Emperor Paul I's daughter, the Grand Duchess Ekaterina Pavlovna. The contract was signed in Gatchina on 1 October 1799, and the Grand Duke is thought to have received these lithographs after the visit as a gift for his efforts, as they were produced by the engraver Gabriel Lory fils in 1803-5.
