Condition
Both pictures are darker int one and softer in colour than the catalogue illustrations would suggest and both canvases have been relined. The first (illustrated on the far left) is in good overall condition however there is a thick varnish and surface dirt overall. There are a few minor scuffs and abrasions including a paint loss lower right. There is also retouching lower centre right and upper centre left. Ultraviolet reveals a few scattered minor old retouchings. The second (to the right on the left hand page) is in good overall condition however there is very minor flaking lower right and scattered minor abrasions and scuffs. There is also an old paint loss by his left temple. Ultraviolet reveals minor scattered retoucings however all appear to be cosmetic and a varnish hinders further inspection. The third (to the top of the right hand page) is in good overall codniton but for some very minor scattered abrasions. There is also evidence of an old s-shaped tear in the background centre left, measuring approx. 30 in. but it has been well repeaired. This relates to a large patch of retoucing above the seated figure as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. Ultraviolet reveals a few scattered retouchings however the varnish impedes inspection. The fourth picture (illustrated below on the right hand page) is in good overall condition. The darker pigment sin the background centre left have gone slightly and there is a paint loss centre right as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. Ultrviolet reveals some minor old scattered retouchings however the varnish impedes inspection. All are offered in gilt wood slip style frames in good overall condition.
